OLYMPIA – The Washington state Senate today passed an amended version of House Bill 1915, which would make financial education a required offering in public schools. Treasurer Mike Pellicciotti, who requested the Senate version of the bill and is partnering with Rep. Skyler Rude on the House legislation, issued the following statement on this evening’s Senate action:

“The need to equip Washingtonians with financial education has never been greater and the Senate taking action today is a commitment to the next generation that our state prioritizes the basic skills necessary to succeed in the twenty-first century.”

“Our legislative partners, Rep. Skyler Rude and Sen. Javier Valdez, have been champions to see this legislation enacted this year and I thank them for their advocacy as we move forward together.”

“As we’ve heard from students, educators, community organizations, local leaders, and small business owners, financial literacy is a cornerstone that can help individuals and communities alike seize economic opportunities and weather financial hardship. The time is now to finalize the bill and get it to the Governor’s desk.”

After receiving a vote of 47-1 in the Senate, HB 1915 now returns to the House of Representatives for a concurrence vote.
