OLYMPIA – Following a federal judge granting a preliminary injunction today to block the Trump administration’s attempts to indiscriminately withhold congressionally authorized federal funding for the states, Treasurer Mike Pellicciotti issued the following:
“The initial wave of executive orders from the Trump administration were designed to test the limits of America’s Constitutional order and undermine the authority of Congress. We saw it coming. My office has worked with State Treasurers around the country and with the Biden Administration since last Fall to prepare for this risk of unlawful withholdings by the federal government. Today’s order is an unqualified victory, but more attempts to coerce our state are sure to come. Today’s win is a critical reminder of how important it is that the Legislature protect our state’s financial reserves in the upcoming 4-year budget.
“I appreciate the partnership with State Treasurers around the nation on this issue. I am particularly thankful for the partnership with our Assistant Attorneys General under the leadership of Attorney General Nick Brown and Office of Financial Management Director K.D. Chapman-See under the leadership of Governor Bob Ferguson, who are working to ensure the interests and rights of every Washingtonian remain secure.
“The Office of the State Treasurer will remain diligent in protecting Washington’s financial health and continue advocating for the protection of our State Treasury funds through the economic chaos of this administration.”
